Russell Terriers

Welcome to the NRTFC
"Russell Terrier" "History"

As I was growing up in "England"

Facts;
1948 England Dog Called "Jack Russell' (No papers)
1948 England Dog called "Fox Terrier"
1948 England Dog called " Hunt Terrier' (No Papers) Solid Color
1948 England the ''Jack Russell' and "Fox Terrier" were two separate breeds.

I refer to ''UKC'' breed standard "Smooth Fox Terrier" History.
The "Smooth Fox Terrier" was solid in color. (Hunt Terrier) please see "Ultimate Jack Russell Terrier" "Howell books' by Mary Strom page 232.   Please see picture below.

The History also goes on to say:

Low on leg, hunters began to develop a longer legged terrier predominantly white in color so as not to be mistaken for a fox. Early terriers were smooth coated.

1948 England Dog called ''Jack Russell'' (No papers) ''History'' was always a smooth coated dog.

Please refer to UKC ''Wire Hair Fox Terrier'' ''History'' the wire haired dog, came later, 15 years later.

So in the beginning we have the ''LOW ON LEG,'' solid color (Hunt Terrier) smooth; then blended with the ''Old English White Terrier'' sound more like a ''Jack Russell' (No papers). The one we remember from 1948 and before.

Enter the JRTCA who didn't know a ''Jack Russell' and ''Fox Terrier'' apart, and registered every thing together. However, in the 1980's the JRTCA stopped registering the ''Jack Russell'' that looked like the original 1948 dog with (No Papers) as people knew it in England, and told breeders in USA they were not correct ,we needed to have them spayed or neutered.

The JRTCA continued to register the "Fox Terrier" Blends as ''Jack Russell’s''. Concentrating on the working aspect of the breed, the dogs became more and more HYPER! They did not make nice all round family members.

AKC registered the dog as the ''Jack Russell’ still blended, then the AKC parent club went forward with the 12" to 14'' Parson Russell' which is in fact the ''Fox Terrier'' pre its show days. Any thing under is a disqualification and can not be shown in AKC.

Now we have the 10" to 12" ’’AKC Jack Russell’ who was left out in the cold, the (under 12’’) dog so to speak, I refer you to the AKC breed standard for the ''Parson Russell’’ ("Fox Terrier") www.akc.org. The under 12'' dogs, are still being shown in UKC. This dog was shown in UKC as a ''Jack Russell'' UKC has now changed the name to ''Parson Russell'' I refer you to the breed standard for the ''Smooth Fox Terrier'' in the beginning this
dog was LOW ON LEG.

This dog was the FOUNDATION for the breed 10" to 12" 'Parson Russell' (''Fox Terrier'') that is now showing in UKC. We all know how Foundation Breeds start in UKC, then go on to get changed in AKC. Years down the road, they do not look like the same dog, plus many have genetics problems!!

''FANCIERS'' who were left out in the cold The ''Under Parson'' is NOT the ''Russell Terrier'' In fact its shares its bloodline and heritage ,with UKC ''Parson Russell Terrier'' and AKC ''Parson Russell Terrier''.

USA 1995 A registry is started for the original ''Jack Russell'' (no papers) going back to 1948 as we knew it, not blended, two separate breeds. This dog was called the ''English Jack Russell Terrier'' and the club was formed. The dog was given an '' English Jack Russell'' "Breed standard "by the English Jack Russell Club ''Board'' and Members. This dog has NEVER been an FCI dog. The FCI does not RECOGNIZE the "Russell Terrier" "The English Jack Russell Club" changed its name in 2003, to”Russell Terrier Foundation Club" which is now the Provisional National Club for the "Russell Terrier" licensed by UKC.

USA 2001 UKC recognizes the ''English Jack Russell'' as the ''Russell Terrier''. In 2003 The American Rare Breed Association also recognized the "Russell Terrier". We were all excited, finally our Old Dogs, had been recognized as what they should be. We refer you to www.ukcrussellterrier.com   - Photo Gallery - Foundation Stock for pictures of many of these individuals. All with FS on their pedigree. They were the only dogs to be given this status, by the UKC. Some had purple ribbon status; pedigrees had been kept since 1961.

Facts: please refer to ''Anna Cathrine Nicholas'' book on the ''Jack Russell'' 1990 before they began to get popular, you will find this on the clubs web site,  www.ukcrussellterrier.com or www.russellterrier.com she refers to this dog as a nice family pet, who will hunt, not the crazy blend of today. Which thousands of them, are in the pound, and no homes can be found.

Facts: New Zealand, Japan, South Africa, and Australia, claim in 1990 ''Ultimate Jack Russell Terrier'' page 251, to be the only countries which separate them into two different breeds. No inter-breeding allowed. This is not true; The" National Russell Terrier Foundation Club" has pedigrees, to prove this, also take a look at the dogs. Unfortunately, people may lie, but the dog doesn’t, with a judge’s eye, one can see the blend with the "Parson Russell"(Fox Terrier) infusion.

The Australians admit they used the old colonel ''Jack Russell' (no papers) taken on the ships, at that time ,as rodent exterminators, the crossing to Australia took up to 10 months, This is documented in 'Fremantle '. They were used on ships, and taken to many countries. None of them registered, none of them had papers.
The ''UKC'' ''AKC ''finally has the correct ''History'' on the’ Parson Russell Terrier" and ''Fox Terrier'' along with the ''Fox Terrier Club GB".

For further information, and free, UKC approved illustrated guide, for the "PURE BRED" "RUSSELL TERRIER" with ''NO'' '' Parson Russell Terrier'' infusion Call 602 549 6949
The "RUSSELL TERRIER" does not have "TOY" or MINIATURE in its "BREED STANDARD" it’s simply 10'' to 12 inches.

So now we have the:

''Hunt Terrier''
''Jack Russell''
''Smooth Fox Terrier''
''Wire Fox Terrier''
''Jack Russell Blend''
Last but not least.
''Russell Terrier'' Yes I guess it has gone full circle, this is what happens when a country (England) does not recognize a breed. People can infuse any thing they like into it, then the breed becomes ''bastardized'' Such a wonderful little dog, that almost was forgotten.

Yours Sincerely,
